Reasons Why You Should Write Things Down

"Write down the thoughts of the moment. Those that come unsought for are commonly the most valuable."
                                                                                                                      Francis Bacon, Sr.

Hi!

According to Henrik;

One of the simplest but most powerful habits I have established in my life in the past five years is to write things down. Why is it so important?

1. If your memory is anything like mine it's like a leaking bucket.

Since I've started to write things down more often I have also noticed when reviewing old notes how much my memory can leak. The memory isn't very reliable. Every time we remember something we recreate what happened rather than just replay a film from our mental archives. The recreation is directed by a number of things such our beliefs, our emotional state at the time and our self-image.

What you remember about an event may differ quite a bit from what someone else remembers. There is a wide variety of interpretations of reality. And then when you try to remember that interpretation of an event later on it can change even more. So we need some kind of system outside of ourselves.

2. Ideas don't stay for long.

Fine or awesome ideas can pop up at the strangest times but they tend to not stay for long in your head. So you need to capture them fast or they are gone in the wind.

3. Written goals are very important.

One thing a lot of very successful self improvement writers - Brian Tracy, Zig Ziglar and so on - go on and on about is the importance of having written goals. A written goal brings clarity and focus. It gives you a direction. And by rewriting your goals you not only reaffirm what your goals are.You may also find new insights that bring more clarity and focus to your goal and life.

A written goal is also a powerful reminder that you can use to keep yourself on the right track when you feel stressed and may consider making hasty decisions.

4. To remind yourself of what to focus on.

Often we get caught up in our everyday business and lose track of what is most important. To keep yourself on track - instead of just keeping yourself busy with low-priority tasks - simply write down a reminder that can stop your thoughts when you see it and guide you back on track again. It can for example be your current major goal. I also like reminders like: "keep things extremely simple" and "what is the most important thing I can do right now?" Write down your reminder and put that reminder where you can't avoid seeing throughout your day.

5. Unloading your mental RAM.

When you don't occupy your mind with having to remember every little thing - like how much milk to get - you become less stressed and it becomes easier to think clearly. This is, in my opinion, one of the most important reasons to write things down. Feeling calmer and more relaxed does not only improves your health but also makes life easier and more smooth and effective.

6. Clearer thinking.

You can't hold that many thoughts in your head at once. If you want to solve a problem it can be helpful to write down your thoughts, facts and feelings about it. Then you don't have to use your for mind for remembering, you can instead use it to think more clearly. Having it all written down gives you an overview and makes it easier to find new connections that can help you solve the problem.

7. Get to know yourself and your life better and improve long-term focus.

You can use a journal as a way to keep an overview of your thinking over a longer time span and to recognize both positives and negatives in your thinking and actions.

You may, for example, think of yourself as a healthy person but realize when you read through your journal that you have only been out running four times this month. Or perhaps you have an image of your life going pretty well but discover when reading through your notes for the last month that you are negative about your job or a relationship in almost every entry.

By writing things down you can help yourself to spot trouble and get yourself back on track and keep yourself there within a larger timeframe. Or your journal may tell you something that you haven't really paid much attention to about yourself and/or about your life. And so this can bring clarity.

So, those are seven of the most important reasons why I write everything down. How to capture your thoughts? Well, that's up to you.

At the moment I usually use Word or a pen and paper to think things through, TeuxDeux.com for my to-do lists and when I'm out somewhere and get an idea I type it down in my cell phone. But try different ways and find the ones that you feel most comfortable and effective with.

I hope this email will help you to explore new awesome ideas in life, think more clearly and get to know yourself better,

Henrik

12 Life Lessons Everyone Must Learn

Have you begun to realize that there is much more to learn about life than what you were taught in school? If so, you'll find the following 12 life lessons to be some of the most important lessons you've ever learned.  In fact, after you're finished reading these, it might be a  good idea to save this somewhere on your computer or print it and read it every day...

1.    Paying Cash is Better Than Borrowing

The purpose of credit and borrowing money is to make a profit for the lender. Every time that you borrow money to buy something, you're agreeing to pay more money for it later so that someone else can make a profit. Therefore it's best to buy what you want with cash and to save the extra money for helping yourself instead of someone else.

2.    Your Health is Your Life

You only have one body and it has to last you for the rest of your life. Therefore, your life and your health are directly linked and you should guard your personal health with your life. This means refusing to give in to the temptation to eat junk or to live an inactive lifestyle. Make proper nutrition, consistent balanced exercise and stress management a part of your lifestyle and you'll have a good healthy life.

3.    You Must Give to Get

One of the major causes for unhappiness is expecting to get something for nothing. In life, you will receive only according to quality and quantity with which you give. This is true in your relationships, your health, career and your financial life.

4.    Being Right Does Not Build Relationships

The best way to build empowering relationships with other people is to understand them and to be understood by them. Getting into disputes, debates or arguments about who is right and who is wrong is a dead end.  Focus instead on being compassionate and treating people the way you would like to be treated.

5.    Most of Getting What You Want is Being Bold Enough to Ask

There are two things which keep people from getting what they really want out of life: they either don't know what they want, or they are too afraid to ask for it. Learn to ask for the things you want, if people say no, you've lost nothing. But if you make it a habit to ask for what you want you'd be surprised at how often you get it.

6.    Fear Can Be Your Best Friend

Fear is not always bad, and sometimes it can be your best friend. If you're afraid of being in poor health, you'll work a lot harder at keeping yourself healthy. If you're afraid of having someone else (like the government), responsible for your financial life you'll work harder to build your financial safety net. In fact, The only time that fear becomes bad is when it keeps you from doing something you really want to do.

7.    Knowledge is Only Power When it's Used

Some of the smartest people in this world never use their knowledge and therefore never benefit from it. However, when knowledge is applied it becomes active and powerful...it also increases your learning because you begin to learn from experience. When you learn something useful, put it to use as soon as possible.

8.    There are Seasons in Life

You'll have times in your life when everything seems to be happening at once, then you'll also have times when nothing seems to be happening. Learn to endure the seasons of life by working hard when you have plenty to do, and by saving your financial resources for times when you may not have as much. Also, learn to use the slower seasons to rest and recharge yourself.

9.    Marry Your Best Friend

Looks fade, so does physical attraction and so does the romantic "puppy love." If you want to have a lasting courtship and to raise your children as a couple, marry your best friend.

10.    Collect Memories

Keep a Journal, take pictures and keep them somewhere safe. Someday you'll be very glad that you did, and so will your generations after you.

11.    Choose a Career that Makes You Happy

Life is too short to be unhappy with what you're doing 40 to 50 hours a week. Not to mention that unhappiness in your career will filter into other areas of your life. Choose a job that you love, and you'll never have to work another day... and you get paid for it. Not a bad deal.

12.    Higher Standards Mean Higher Rewards

Having high expectations for your health, your relationships, your career and your financial life might mean you'll have to work harder. It might also mean you'll be disappointed more often. But the rewards that it will bring in strength of character and then success will far outweigh any price you had to pay. Keep your standards high, and don't settle for less than what you really want.
